When was the last time you rolled down a hill? You know, when you lie down on your back in the soft, green grass at the top of a steep hill, stretch your arms up over your head, and just let yourself roll? Much to my surprise and delight, I did it a few weeks ago!
My husband Bruce & I were golfing on a cool, sunny summer morning. After we teed off at the 3rd hole, we had to walk up a steep hill to get to the green. When we got to the top, the thought occurred to me: “I want to roll down this hill!” This thought was quickly followed by another: “No! That would be childish and silly.” And then: “Yes! I want to roll down this hill!” When I shared my inspiration with Bruce, he simply shrugged and said, “Go ahead!” So I did!
I rolled and tumbled and laughed out loud all the way down the hill. The spinning sensation reminded me of riding the carnival ride, The Octopus. When I came to a stop at the bottom of the hill, I just stayed there and waited for my world to stop swirling.
Immediately a kind-hearted woman in a golf cart zipped over to me and shouted, “Are you ok?!?” (She must have thought the guy watching me roll from on top of the hill was a real prince!) I replied, “Yes – I just wanted to roll down the hill” and thanked her for her concern.
So what did I learn from this experience? Put the FUN in fundamentals! In the game of golf, there are so many points to remember: keep your head down, keep your eye on the ball, keep your arm straight, bend your knees, follow through, etc. These are the fundamentals of the game, but without the FUN, golf can be aggravating and frustrating. Life can be the same way. Golf pro Gardner Dickenson says, “They say golf is like life, but don’t believe them. Golf is more complicated than that!”
What are the basic FUNdamentals of your life? Things like: treat people the way you want to be treated; life is short – eat dessert first; honesty is the best policy; do the right thing for the right reasons; be true to your word, etc. Please add to this list – I’d love to hear from you!
The Word of God says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” – Galatians 6:9-10a.
Have fun, remember the basics, and keep on rollin’!
